    Kamakura: A First Look

How a coastal base became a city—and outlasted its government.

Kamakura lies in eastern Japan, with hills behind it and Sagami Bay in front. Here, a warrior leader established a base that grew into a government.

But a government could not live on victories. Its people needed food, roads, houses, places to worship, and someone to mend what broke.

Follow those connections through the city. Its story will take us from a leader’s residence to a roadside drain, and from a bronze Buddha to the people who kept it standing.
