The Eastern Army organized its position around the shogunal Muromachi palace, known as the Hana-no-Gosho, and constructed a large defended enclosure called the Onkamae. Kyoto's history office describes earthworks and ditches extending roughly between Ichijō, Teranouchi, Ogawa, and Karasuma. Refugees, courtiers, warriors, and wealthy townspeople crowded inside, where fire and disease remained threats. The fortifications are not standing walls today, although excavations have identified related traces around Shōkoku-ji and Karasuma-Ichijō. Modern roads and institutions now cross the area, so the most reliable visitor experience is to understand scale and street relationships, not to hunt for a continuous visible rampart.
