Emperor Saga established a villa called Saga-in in this outer western landscape and used it after abdication. In 876, Princess Masako arranged its conversion into Daikaku-ji, with Prince Tsunesada, then the monk Gōjaku, as founding abbot. That origin explains the temple's enduring monzeki identity and court vocabulary, but it does not make the present halls ninth-century survivors. Fire, war, relocation, and early modern rebuilding repeatedly transformed the precinct. The strongest continuity is the relationship among imperial memory, temple institution, and pond landscape rather than an intact villa building.
