Overview

Map: GSI Japan Daitoku-ji is a large Rinzai Zen complex whose history moves from imperial patronage through the Ōnin War, mercantile-supported recovery, daimyo memorial temples, and the culture of tea. Jukō-in, one of its subtemples, was founded in 1566 by Miyoshi Yoshitsugu for Miyoshi Nagayoshi and became the mortuary temple of Sen no Rikyū and the three Sen tea families. Its 1583 Main Hall, paintings by Kanō Shōei and Eitoku, dry garden, graves, and tea rooms form a concentrated record of religion, art, warrior memory, and tea practice.
