Map: GSI Japan Mibu and the former Ikedaya site preserve two linked scales of Shinsengumi history: the neighborhood in which the corps formed under Kyoto's security regime and the downtown inn where its members attacked an anti-shogunate gathering in 1864. Mibu-dera, the Yagi residence, and the former Maekawa residence show how private houses and temple grounds sustained the organization before it moved to Nishihongwanji. Graves, markers, and later monuments preserve the locality's remembrance of that history. Ikedaya itself has disappeared, leaving a municipal stone marker within a modern commercial street. The area is historically valuable precisely because original structures, active religious space, private property, later commemoration, and a destroyed incident site survive in different forms.
