Overview

Map: GSI Japan Kan'ei-ji once occupied most of Ueno Hill as one of the largest religious institutions in Edo. Tenkai founded it in 1625 under Tokugawa patronage, shaping its buildings and landscape as an eastern counterpart to Enryaku-ji. Imperial princes served as abbots, six Tokugawa shoguns were buried here, and worship, spectacle, learned culture, and government overlapped across an enormous precinct. The Battle of Ueno in 1868 destroyed its core. Temple survivors, war memorials, rebuilt halls, Ueno Park, museums, the zoo, and restricted mausolea now share the former sacred ground.
