After the Battle of Sekigahara, Asano Yoshinaga entered Kii in 1600. The Asano house developed the present main, second, and western enclosures, built a linked keep complex, redirected the formal approach, and organized a more extensive castle town. These works changed Wakayama from an occupation center into a durable domain capital. The linked arrangement joined large and small keeps, turrets, gates, and connecting galleries so that the summit functioned as one defensive unit. The current white silhouette reflects this plan, but its concrete fabric is modern. Asano-period stonework and layout, rather than the rebuilt surfaces alone, provide the surviving material evidence.
