Map: GSI Japan Shimonoseki's Kanmon Strait made the Chōshū domain both a gatekeeper and a target during the political and military crises of the 1860s. Coastal batteries opened fire on foreign shipping in 1863 and were defeated by a four-power fleet in 1864; the city then became a base for internal domain revolution, Kiheitai mobilization, resistance to shogunal expeditions, and the 1866 fighting toward Kokura. No single monument contains this history. Archaeological battery remains at Maeda, cannon replicas at Mimosusogawa, documents and objects in the City History Museum, the former Shiraishi residence site, Kōzanji, and Itsukushima Shrine preserve different forms of evidence. Read together, they connect international violence, civil war, institutional innovation, urban memory, and the terrain of the strait.
