Map: GSI Japan Sawara preserves the two lives that made Inō Tadataka's surveying career possible. His former residence records roughly three decades as the adopted head of a merchant house, brewer, trader, and village official. Across the Onogawa, the Inō Tadataka Memorial Museum preserves maps, instruments, notebooks, and documents from the long survey project he began after retirement. The surrounding mercantile townscape matters because surveying did not emerge from nowhere: household accounting, river commerce, local administration, accumulated resources, and later study all preceded the expeditions. Residence, river frontage, preserved district, and museum together connect provincial commercial competence to a new measured image of Japan.
