Overview

Map: GSI Japan On Nakanoshima in the Oki Islands, the consequences of the 1221 Jōkyū War remain attached to a compact group of places: the site of retired emperor Go-Toba's residence, his cremation mound, a museum, Oki Shrine, poem monuments, and the island landscape that made exile both remote and sustainable. These sites preserve no intact imperial residence. Their value lies in combining terrain, documentary memory, material custody, and later commemoration across eight centuries.
