After the shogunate fell, the former medicinal garden passed through medical and educational authorities before becoming attached to the new university's science program. Its collections changed from plants cultivated chiefly for drugs into a broader archive for taxonomy, morphology, teaching, and conservation. That transition did not erase the Edo garden; it redirected a site already organized around living specimens and practical knowledge. The garden remains a research facility, not simply an ornamental park. Labels, glasshouses, herbaria, experimental plots, and restricted work areas express scientific use, even when visitors encounter them as a calm urban landscape.
