Overview
In 645, Prince Naka no Ōe, the future Emperor Tenji, and Nakatomi no Kamatari coordinated a palace attack on Soga no Iruka. The Nihon shoki places the killing in front of Empress Kōgyoku during a court ceremony. Iruka's father Emishi died the following day as the senior Soga household collapsed.
Kōgyoku then abdicated. After Prince Karu accepted the throne as Emperor Kōtoku, Naka no Ōe became crown prince and Kamatari received an advisory role. Senior offices also went to Abe no Uchimaro and Soga no Ishikawamaro, while learned men from the peninsula advised the new government.
The coup and succession opened a new political alignment, but they did not by themselves complete every reform later grouped under the name Taika. Court relocation, edicts, official ranks and provincial measures followed through separate decisions whose implementation remains unevenly documented.
