Women recruited from across Japan performed the skilled reeling work and were expected, especially in the founding program, to transmit mechanized methods after returning home. Their role cannot be represented adequately by either a celebratory tale of emancipation or an automatic projection of every later 'factory girl' abuse onto 1872 Tomioka. Conditions changed across government, Mitsui, Hara, and Katakura ownership and over 115 years of operation. Hours, wages, dormitories, education, health care, discipline, food, clothing, and worker agency require period-specific evidence. Tomioka City's dedicated research program now studies those subjects through architecture, records, archaeology, and labor history. Dormitory and residential remains give this workforce a spatial presence even where interiors or exhibitions are not continuously open.
