Komine is unusual in the Tōhoku region for the extent of its stone-built defenses. The walls use local volcanic stone and retain evidence of different construction episodes, repairs, corners, gates, and terrace lines. They are not a uniform untouched shell: individual sections have shifted, collapsed, been dismantled for conservation, or received replacement stones. Even so, the masonry remains the strongest material link to the seventeenth-century castle. Reading wall batter, changes in stone size, and the narrow routes between enclosures reveals a defensive system that the freestanding turret alone cannot explain. Modern safety rails and repaired joints should be recognized as conservation layers.
