Map: GSI Japan Matsushiro preserves a layered landscape associated with Sakuma Shōzan, the domain scholar who combined Confucian learning, Western military knowledge, coastal-defense analysis, technical experiment, teaching, and political advocacy in the decades before the Meiji Restoration. The historical residence site, Shōzan Shrine, relocated Kōgitei house, relocated En'u-tei tea room, and museum collections do not have the same status. Some mark original ground; others were moved from places of confinement or from Kyoto; the shrine dates from 1938; and the former memorial museum is in a period of institutional change. Together they show how a contested Bakumatsu thinker became a civic figure whose buildings, writings, objects, and memory were assembled in his home town.
