Map: GSI Japan At the foot of Moriyama, two neighbouring sites preserve different parts of the Hōjō story. The Hōjō residence survives as an excavated and partly opened archaeological site, later occupied by the convent Enjō-ji after the Kamakura government fell. Ganjōju-in is a living temple within the footprint of a much larger medieval complex. Its present halls do not reproduce that lost precinct, but five sculptures made by Unkei in 1186 survive there as National Treasures. Read together, the residence, temple, archaeology, and sculpture connect the Hōjō family's Izu base to the formation, expansion, and eventual destruction of Kamakura rule.
