Excavation in the Goshonouchi valley found a five-by-three-bay foundation building, postholes, ditches, and a well. Finds included a high-quality stone inkstone, metal water dropper, seal, bone die, and Chinese celadon and white porcelain fragments. These objects do not identify one owner by name, but they strongly characterize an elite literate household connected to administration, leisure, and long-distance exchange. The inkstone and water dropper have also entered museum interpretation of Hōjō political culture. Archaeology here is more reliable than later house labels because it reveals practices without forcing a precise biography onto the excavated rooms.
