Overview

Map: GSI Japan Hakodate's Motomachi churches and Hekketsuhi hold two different consequences of the port's nineteenth-century opening. On the slopes below Mount Hakodate, Orthodox, Catholic, and Anglican institutions established worship communities whose present buildings mostly date from rebuilding after urban fires. Farther along the mountain edge, Hekketsuhi commemorates former-shogunate forces killed in the 1868–1869 Hakodate War and the civilians who recovered and buried their bodies. The sites should not be merged into one preserved foreign quarter or battlefield. Their connection is the transformed port city: diplomacy and migration introduced new religious institutions, while civil war created a difficult local landscape of burial, loyalty, and later reconciliation.
