    Portrait of Wake no Hiromushi

    Nara period

    Wake no Hiromushi

    和気広虫

    Overview

Wake no Hiromushi (730–799) served in the imperial court’s female administration. From Bizen, in present-day Okayama, she became a trusted attendant of the sovereign Kōken, who later ruled as Shōtoku. She is recorded conveying an imperial command in 762. When Kōken entered Buddhist orders that year, Hiromushi followed her and took the religious name Hōkin. [S01]

Her surviving biography credits her with asking for reduced punishments after Fujiwara no Nakamaro’s rebellion in 764 and raising orphaned children as adoptees. Those activities give her a place in the aftermath of violence beyond palace ceremony. In 769, her brother Kiyomaro travelled to Usa shrine in connection with the succession controversy involving the monk Dōkyō. Both siblings lost their standing; Hiromushi was exiled to Bingo, in present-day Hiroshima. [S01, S02, S03]

Recalled under Emperor Kōnin in 770, she returned to court office. Under Emperor Kammu she again transmitted imperial commands, with an appointment recorded in 789. She died in 799. The favourable obituary preserves a reputation for compassion, while her repeated service also shows the practical importance of women who carried the sovereign’s words into government. [S01]
