Map: GSI Japan Yokosuka links the late shogunate's industrial state-building to the rise, defeat, and postwar remembrance of Japan's modern navy. The naval arsenal begun in 1865 introduced large machine shops and stone dry docks, then expanded under the Meiji state into a naval base and shipyard. Across the port, the memorial ship Mikasa compresses another sequence: British construction, service as the Combined Fleet flagship, accidental sinking, treaty-era demilitarization, fixed preservation, occupation-era stripping, and a 1961 restoration.
