Overview

Map: GSI Japan Ryūkō-ji occupies the place remembered for the attempted execution of Nichiren in 1271. The site's identity rests on that event, but the visible precinct is a much later accumulation: an Edo-period Main Hall and gate, a 1910 wooden five-storied pagoda, a relocated silk-industry residence, a cave identified by temple tradition as Nichiren's place of confinement, and a postwar peace stupa. The result is not a preserved Kamakura-period execution ground. It is a devotional landscape in which successive generations built architecture, ritual, and local memory around the Tatsunokuchi persecution.
