Overview

Map: GSI Japan Minobusan Kuon-ji is the head temple of Nichiren Shū and a sacred landscape formed around Nichiren's nine years at Mount Minobu. He entered the mountain in 1274, established a hermitage in Nishidani, and asked that his tomb remain near Minobu after his death in 1282. The institution moved its main complex to the present, more spacious site in 1475, while the hermitage and mausoleum area retained its separate authority. Fires and modern reconstruction have changed the buildings, but the mountain still joins headquarters, founder memorial, pilgrimage ascent, ritual practice, and forest in one historical system.
