Edo period
Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu
柳沢吉保
Overview
Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, born in the late 1650s, followed his father Yasutada into the service of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi at Tatebayashi. When Tsunayoshi became shogun in 1680, Yoshiyasu entered the shogunal administration. In 1688 he became soba-yōnin, an attendant who conveyed business directly to the ruler. Access brought exceptional promotion and expanding territorial resources, including Kawagoe and later Kōfu. [S01, S02]
His standing came to rival that of senior councilors, although the title of “tairō-equivalent” described his status rather than appointment to that office. He supported scholars including Ogyū Sorai and studied poetry and Zen. At Edo’s Rikugien he turned an interest in classical verse into a garden of ponds, hills and named views, developed over seven years on land granted by Tsunayoshi in 1695. Household wealth sustained intellectual work and a carefully shaped landscape. [S01, S02, S03]
After Tsunayoshi died in 1709, Yoshiyasu transferred the household to his son Yoshisato and retired. He died in 1714. Later tales and plays cast his rise as the work of a scheming villain. His rise brought a once modest retainer into direct dealings with the shogun, scholars and a large domain. His influence depended closely on one shogun, while the household and garden remained beyond that patron’s death. [S01, S04, S03]
