Sengoku period
Toyotomi Hidetsugu
豊臣秀次
Overview
Toyotomi Hidetsugu (1568–1595), a nephew of the ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi, built a career in campaigns and territorial government before becoming his adopted successor. He established a castle at Hachiman in Ōmi, beside Lake Biwa, and later held extensive lands around Owari. After Hideyoshi’s young son Tsurumatsu died in 1591, Hidetsugu became kanpaku, the imperial regent through whose court office the Toyotomi exercised national authority. [S01]
From the Jurakudai palace in Kyoto he conducted government while Hideyoshi directed the war in Korea. Hidetsugu ordered a nationwide count of households and people and organized relay horses and couriers linking the capital to the invasion headquarters in Kyushu. He also encouraged scholarship and literature. His office had practical work, staff and resources; Hideyoshi’s continued authority nevertheless limited the successor’s independence. [S01, S03]
Hideyori’s birth in 1593 complicated the succession. In 1595 Hidetsugu lost office under accusations of rebellion and died by suicide at the Kōya monastic center. Whether Hideyoshi ordered that death is disputed in modern research. Hideyoshi’s subsequent purge killed Hidetsugu’s children, wives and other dependents, and Jurakudai was demolished. An adult governing household was dismantled to leave a child successor; the accusations do not by themselves prove a rebellion. [S01, S02, S03]
