Overview

Map: GSI Japan Ōkuma Shigenobu's birthplace and memorial museum belong to a larger Saga landscape of late-domain reform. His childhood house preserves the social setting of a castle-town samurai family, while the reconstructed Saga Castle palace interprets Nabeshima Naomasa's fiscal, educational, military, medical, and technological policies. Reading the two sites together explains why early Meiji government drew so many officials and reformers from Saga without reducing their later careers to a single domain program.
