Attraction
The nationally designated landscape is not a single monument. It consists of relationships among the Saru River, settlements, routes, forests, fields, houses, cultural institutions, and places known through Ainu language and tradition. Its official title—Cultural Landscape along the Saru River Resulting from Ainu Traditions and Modern Settlement—keeps two histories together. Ainu land knowledge and cultural practice remain fundamental, while colonization, imposed changes in livelihood, agriculture, forestry, roads, and public works also reshaped the same terrain. Nibutani is one concentrated place from which to read that larger system. The designation therefore protects neither an imagined untouched wilderness nor a frozen premodern scene, but a lived landscape in which historical layers continue to affect one another.
