    Portrait of Akahashi Tōshi

    Muromachi period

    Akahashi Tōshi

    赤橋登子

    Overview

Akahashi Tōshi (1306–1365) was born into a branch of the Hōjō family and married Ashikaga Takauji. Her father was Hisatoki; her brother Moritoki became the Kamakura government’s last regent. She bore Yoshiakira and Motouji, who later held leading positions in the Ashikaga regime. Her marriage joined two powerful warrior households before Takauji turned against the government her natal family served. [S01, S02, S03, S04]

In 1333, when Takauji went west to fight the opponents of Kamakura, Tōshi and the young Yoshiakira remained in Kamakura as hostages. After he changed sides, they escaped. A political reversal undertaken by an absent commander thus placed his wife and child in immediate danger. Their survival preserved the family that would supply the next generation of Ashikaga rulers, while the Hōjō government and Moritoki’s position collapsed. [S01, S02]

Tōshi lived through the formation of separate Ashikaga centers: Yoshiakira governed in Kyoto, and Motouji headed the administration at Kamakura. Her natal connections also linked the family to Jōkōmyō-ji, a Hōjō-associated temple that received Ashikaga protection. Takauji died in 1358, and Tōshi survived him until 1365. The founding of the new regime did not erase its older family relationships; those relationships remained present in its succession and religious institutions. [S01, S03, S02, S04]
